Happy birthday! Dungeon Robber web game is now available!

It’s my birthday today, and here’s my gift to my readers and kickstarters: the Dungeon Robber video game beta is now available!

PLAY DUNGEON ROBBER!

I’ve talked before about this game. To recap, it’s a free Flash web game, a final bonus reward to cap the Random Dungeon Generator Kickstarter. It uses the original D&D rules to construct random dungeons and then lets you send in characters to die.

As you may have noticed, I have a tendency to contract featuritis. I always end up jamming a few more things than I planned in all of my projects. As I’ve mentioned before, that’s how this game ended up with pets, extra classes, and the textbook sign of feature creep, a fishing minigame. Well, since then, I’ve added new weapons (including D&D classics like the bastard sword), new treasures, new class abilities, new town buildings, and, based on many hours of alpha testing, new conveniences.

Here’s one: Dungeon dead ends, the curse of any randomly-generated labyrinth, are now semi-safe locations where you can eat food, rest and recover a spell or two, and even send a henchman back to town to sell some of your inventory-clogging vendor trash. All of this comes with a risk. While you’re sitting in the dead end, munching your iron rations and keeping watch down the hallway, you might be ambushed from behind by a monster passing through a secret door.

I’ve also implemented every trick and surprise in the original 1979 random-dungeon charts, including ones which are vanishingly rare. If you happen to find a magic pool that grants wishes in the dungeon, email me and let me know, and tell me what you wished for and how it turned out.

This game has a lot of moving parts, and it’s sure to be buggy. I’d like to hear about any bugs you hit. Also let me know what parts are fun, what parts aren’t, what you found confusing, and what grisly end met your 2nd level Dungeon Robber who somehow found himself on level 7 of the dungeon. My email is paul at blogofholding.com.

And finally, some challenges to you: I’ve been playing this game, in some version or other, for months, and I have never become King. And on the perma-death Advanced mode, my record is even worse. I’ve never made it to level 5, Knight. If you break my records, let me know.

Ah! The restore game doesn’t work! It’s sends me to /index.html which doesn’t exist!

Man, you’ve stolen hours out of my life with this game! Been playing off and on for about two weeks, and I seem to have fairly good luck, as I’ve filled every position in my town, including King! This is all on Basic, though, I’m too chicken to play advanced yet.

Dan: you can restore a game if you first wipe out the existing save. The “Burn it all” button takes you to a 404 error, but when you go back the the right URL the game has been wiped. Then you can restore; even though you get that 404 error again, just go back to the game URL and you should be all set.

    Thanks for the game, Paul!

loving this game. doing well with basic…retired everything except princesss. Only encountered one pool and no red mists…the pool stripped one of my high attributes.

the “sell all vendor trash” seems to have broken.

  6. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added”
checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four
emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
    Thanks a lot!

Got to King pretty easily by playing carefully with a high Dex/high Wis character. Found a minor bug in that the monument will list Queens as Kings.

Hope I find that pool, though….

I love this game, it is simply addicting, I really hope you can get it to work on mobile devices so I can be even more addicted.
I may have found a bug or two.
    1. playing as a Cleric, I found a fishing hole, it appears that the cast your line to fish the mini game and cast cure light wounds use the same key command “C” and the fishing mini game supersedes the ability to cast your spells. You can fish, prepare spells and eat food but not heal yourself with spells.
    2. Not sure if this is a bug, but if it is I am not too sure I want it to be removed lol. Playing as a Wizard with a high Charisma, you are able to go to the coliseum and challenge a vampire. If you case charm on it successfully it will become your henchman, if you challenge a second vampire and successfully cast charm on it, it too will become your henchman, when you enter into the dungeons and reach a dead-end with the two vamps still alive, you can send one of them back to sell your goods. once you lose one of them meaning you only have one vamp left you are no longer able to send it to town to sell your junk.
    3. On the same note above, if you reach a dead end with the two vamps and try to heal up with food, you will heal yourself and one of the vamps as well if injured, but can’t seem to heal up the second vamp. The second will remain injured, you’ll still have the option to eat food, and when you do your food is consumed but no life regained for your henchman vampire.
a weird thing had happened as well, I lost one of my vampires, then charmed a storm giant in its place and was again able to send my vampire to town to sell. Also, if I hire a henchman from the inn, and try to teleport to a random level of the dungeon the hired henchman disappears, but if I charm the vampires and teleport, they will still be with me.

I love this game. I’ve spent many hours playing it. My only complaint is that I wish there was an IPad version.

Is the highest level a “Dungeon Robber” can achieve level 11? And, does the “Dungeon Robber” ever gain bonuses to “To Hit” at certain levels like other classes seem to achieve?

  18. King Paul says:

Crowned king on advanced mode, unlocked everything. Only ever found one potion of treasure finding and disappointed that it and the libram were unavailable when I unlocked king. Also I have never seen a libram which made a visible change to my character sheet, or even that had a ‘use’ option, but after derping my first character to seven on basic and not retiring him, I only played on advanced.

This game is lethal, the only classes that I’ve had get anywhere are dungeon robber (wis) and cleric. I unlocked up to bishop with dungeon robber and then went cleric the rest of the way. Some people use fighter for their endgame, which I do not understand.

Basically this game is run by the question “could this thing I am about to do one-shot me” if the answer is yes, do something else…there will not always be a ‘something else’. Even with this, victory is far from certain. .I’ve only lost a few characters over level six though, a few to missed saving throws, and a few to “eh the odds are fine, I won’t get one-shot”…then getting one-shot

Is there any chance of the game being updated? Flash is going away in a few weeks.

  20. soldierswitheggs says:

For anyone who is still interested in playing this, the game is included in BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint, a collection of over 90000 Flash games that can be played using a downloadable, open source program.

You can Google it pretty easily, or use this link: https://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/
