Dungeon Robber works again!

My roguelike game Dungeon Robber was a casualty of the death of Flash. In the past, I took a couple of shots at getting it to work without Flash, and this weekend I finally succeeded. (It ended up being pretty easy with Ruffle!)

Then in the name of “playtesting” I spent all weekend playing Dungeon Robber. So far I’ve unlocked the thief, fighter, and cleric class. After several years of not playing the game, it’s more fun than I remember! My bad memory means that a little bit of mystery has returned to the game.

The major bug is that flash’s data saving process doesn’t seem to work – but the HTML client-side storage mechanism does. So every time you load up DR, you are prompted to choose the savegame that works. A minor annoyance but not really a big deal… and save games seem perfectly trustworthy so far. I’ve played and retired 5 characters and built out my town substantially. Hoping to get down to build out the whole town soon so I can send a screenshot to myself.

There are other tweaks I’d make nowadays, but that will have to wait till I get an old copy of Macromedia Flash installed somewhere.

My bug report to myself: Ruffle doesn’t seem to handle it gracefully when you visit the graveyard or adventurers monument – luckily, they are pretty much unnecessary locations, except if you plan to be a necromancer cleric.

Hoorah! I have waited for this game to reload for so long and I was missing it… It was the game I played (while listening to an audiobook) whenever I was very sick and had to stay in bed. Though, it is a bit sad that my previous progress has now disappeared.

I had been playing Imperium instead, which is also quite a great game, and I would love it if you expanded on it with more features to make it more interesting. Also, it would be nice if there was a version of the game which relied a bit more on strategy and less on luck? Not that it isn’t fun, but I like the idea of winning because I was being clever and not because I happened to be the first to reach the largest swath of tiles before the enemy.

Thanks for all the awesome video games!

Not sure how this happened, but I got a floating number as a treasure coin result. It didn’t impact cashing in for XP at the bank, but a curious result nonetheless.

Minor bug: the version number doesn’t match the change log :)

It’s great to be able to play this on the website again!! There’s this flash game archiving project called flashpoint and I had been using that to play this earlier. If you are at all planning on working on the game again, I’d love to see a way to restore weakened stats, I used the magic pool and lost one of the increased stats. I played this game a ton years ago and a lot in the past few days but I’ve literally never gotten that result lol. It was devastating.

Some errors I noticed, going to the graveyard crashed my game, it looked like some kind of overflow because the names had some weird characters after them and it just went endlessly. There’s also no way to change the character names or henchman/pets names. Changing the latter causes the game to crash while changing the former does nothing and the game instead keeps the random name.

This is fab! Just had a quick play and found it a little confusing at first but once I got the hang of it, it was a blast!

I did notice that I changed the character’s name but it kept the original one> Other than that, it worked like a charm.

Something’s wrong with the link to “Imperium” on the sidebar. It gets me a field of all blank desert hexes and the game doesn’t work – nothing happens.

The link ‘Play it!’ from the posting works fine.

+2 fishing rod for the win!

    Thank you!

I love this game, and have actually been missing it a lot. One of those games that are more fun than they “should” be, judging from the concept.

Woo Hoo! This is a great day! Now I can get back to trying to finish building a town in advanced (as I’d already done so on regular a long time ago) I can also direct people here who don’t understand OSR.

    Much appreciated

Somehow lost focus while I was renaming a henchman from “undefined” and managed to retire myself, but then the app crashed and I had to reload. I had already banked a few thousand gold. This is a fun little pastime. I might make an Android or iOS app in the spirit of this when I get spare time for a “me” project. Thanks!

On Chrome I’ve experienced a lot of instability with the save system.

Most recently I’ve lost 15000xp of experience and a +1 plate mail along, roughly 4k gold, and 12 healing potions due to a malfunction where it rolled me back to the start of my last dungeon run.

I had exited the dungeon and leveled up from 7 to 8 and then re-entered the dungeon so I’m not sure what happened. Not the first time its happened either, just the first time at such a high level.

I’ve also had complete wiping of my save data, I’ve had it happen three times with no trace of data even though I had a couple hours of playtime.

Extremely frustrating and disheartening and there seems to be no real reason other than the laptop I’m using being shut and moved from one location to another.

  14. I can’t seem to get a character name to stick.

BUT – other than that – YES! I am so happy this game is back. It’s one of my favorites from the Flash days.

  15. Jeff says:

So I am glad to see this game back, however my old HTML save game doesn’t import correctly anymore! Is that an ongoing issue or is there something wrong with my file?

  16. Jeff says:

Okay, so exporting save files generates no code, sadly! I hope this is fixed soon- this is a neat game.

Any chance this could also become an Android app? Because I would love to play it on the move.
